About Foundry Advanced Clay Technologies, Inc

Foundry Advanced Clay Technologies was started by Rob Steele in 1999 with the mission to develop a process solution to reduce and reuse foundry waste streams.

Currently, there are over 15 million tons of foundry molding sand and dust being sent to landfills each year. The headline “Where will all the Foundry Molding Sand go…” was our motivation to tackle this extensive waste stream.

Our university, foundry, and process research and development over the past twenty years has led to two US patents and an EU patent.

The first equipment prototype was completed in 2010. Ongoing foundry trials have been successful in the cost effective hydraulic recovery of bentonite and carbon from molding sand and dust collection fines. Ongoing in foundry application of the recovered slurry have proven the benefits of reuse in green sand molding systems..

The recovered material is improving both casting quality and the molding process as the fully hydrated bentonite allows faster molding property development.

Currently the patents have been assigned to Imerys for ongoing commercial development.
